As part of my work for the 737 Factory Leadership Development Program, I was the lead instructional designer for the 737 Factory Sounds eLearning project, including Needs Analysis, curriculum development, graphic design, SME & vendor partnerships and management, storyboard and script writing, and project evaluation.
The Renton site’s executive wanted to increase factory safety for the 10,000+ employees, contractors, visitors and customers that worked in and around the factory floor, specifically in terms of the many warnings, both visual and auditory, that they would hear there.
I analyzed several dozen factory processes, systems, tools and safety devices, and interviewed dozens more factory workers, managers and engineers to understand the safety needs and responsibilities employees had around airplanes on the floor. As a result, I designed the course and it’s videos around a central mnemonic, which would be used for each sound, process or piece of equipment learners would see: “Stop, Observe, Stay Alert” (SOS).
Factory Sounds was a success, and was a regularly viewed required training for all factory employees. I earned an Outstanding Achievement award for its launch.
